It is widely accepted that the five most notorious causes of stress are:

  • divorce
  • moving location
  • major illness
  • the loss of a job, and the top of the list is
  • the death of a loved one.

In our western society we generally do not face up to the stark reality of death, but it is one facet of life that we should comprehend. The Benedictine monk Notker I of Saint Gall, who died in 912 has been attributed with the saying "in the midst of life we are in death". As profound and obtuse as it may sound, it could be said that death is about life itself. Therefore, we do well not to ignore its reality.

In every decade of Fraser's 80 years thus far, he has experienced the death of a loved one, each one impacted him profoundly. This commenced for him at the age of nine years.

In this book Fraser details his personal journey as he manoeuvred his way through each of these differing situations with varied responses and feelings. These experiences taught him much - about himself, about life, and about death.
